Boston Celtics Bow Down to the King
All the King’s horses and all the King’s men had scrambled Celtics for breakfast, again? OK, that doesn’t make sense, but neither
does the Boston Celtics losing to the Cleveland Cavaliers. It’s obvious that Lebron James is the best player in the league and if I were to start a team, I would take Lebron as my 1st pick. As for Boston’s big 3, KG, PP, and RAY RAY, what happened? They couldn’t stop Zydrunas Ilgauskas, the oldest 32 year old I’ve ever seen. Drew Gooden chipped in another 24 points and 13 rebounds and well, there you have it. It’s not time to panic or anything for Boston, because they still have the best record in the league, BUT, where is the supporting cast. Rajon Rondo did have 6 assists and 7 rebounds, but 3 points in 44 minutes isn’t cutting it. Eddie House and Brian Scalabrine, MIA. On paper, the Celtics bench isn’t bad, with Posey and House. But they need to develop Big Baby Glenn Davis and give Gabe Pruitt some playing time. The Celts are going to make the playoffs but they’re going to need help from the rest of the team to win the title. Until then, ummmm, how about those Patriots.
Al Horford: Not So Fast Durant
And the Rookie of the Year award goes to…hold on, hold on. All preseason, everyone’s been talking about Kevin Durant and
Greg Oden and how they are the best players to come out of college. Then when Oden went down, the ROY award was practically given to Durant before he even stepped on the court. Durant is having a good year, especially for a rookie. But there is one guy out there that might give him a run for his money, that’s Atlanta Hawks power forward Al Horford. Coming out of college champion Florida, Horford was probably the best players out of that team. As of Tuesday, Horford is averaging 8.5 ppg and a whopping 9.8 rbds. If this guy improves on his scoring and averages a double double on the season, he’s got a great chance to be the top rook. No offense to Durant, but Al is also throwing in 1 steal per game and almost 1.5 blocks per. So while the Hawks are flopping, their will be one bird on this team flying high…
Anderson Varejao: Are You Kidding Me?
It seems that Anderson Varejao of the Cleveland Cavaliers wants a lot of money. He thinks his 6.8 ppg and 6.7 rbds are not worth the 5 year $32 million dollar contract extension that Danny Ferry and the Cavs have offered him. You know what I think, this bum isn’t worth half of that. Any NBA player can pulls down those numbers in the minutes Varejao receives, 23 per game. I’m sick of “clubhouse” guys thinking they’re worth
more than they are. I know, he has heart and passion and blah blah blah. But he has no skill. I’m not a stat boy, from the few games that I’ve seen him play, most of his points came of garbage buckets and dunks. I’ve never seen this guy make a post move, or any NBA move for that matter. I just love how he puts a spin on his greediness by saying “”I just want to be treated fairly and I don’t think Danny’s done that.” Well Anderson, where were you before your “breakthrough” year last year, I know you were averaging 5 ppg and 5 rbds. I hope Cleveland can see it’s mistake before it’s too late, how else would they replace those #s (try suiting up Danny Ferry).
P.S. does anyone else see the resemblance???
Extra Mayo Please
O.K. So we know USC has one of the best football programs in the country. But did you know their basketball program is slowly catching up? That’s right, I said basketball. And you can thank Ovinton J’Anthony Mayo for that. Many of you already know, it wasn’t the recruiting of USC’s coach Tim Floyd of Mayo, but rather Mayo recruiting Tim Floyd and USC. He called the coach and expressed interest and the rest is history. With a lineup of super talented freshman and sophomores, the USC Trojan basketball squad is a force to be reckoned with. They just hammered 18th Southern Illinois 70-45 to win the tournament down in Anaheim and O.J. was named MVP. Playing in the toughest conference in the nation (Pac-10) , the Trojans look to ride Mayo all the way to March Madness. With a recruiting class ranked 8th nationally for 2008, dare I say… look out UCLA?
Deepest Darkest Secret
So I’m chatting with one of my fantasy football buddies on Tuesday night, around 10 p.m.-ish. We’ll refer to him by his team name, “Undeniable.” We’re macho-ing it up, talking football this, football that, when I decided to come correct. I told him that I was distracted by, yes, “the Hills.” The hit
reality show on MTV which was a spinoff from Laguna Beach. Right then, something happened, “Undeniable” admitted to watching it too… After a friendly discussion of how Audrina is sprung on Justin Bobby and other drama going on in “the Hills,” I realized that there are probably a lot of guys out there watching this show but are afraid to admit it. OK, I’m hoping that they watch this show for my own sanity. At that point, we realized that the conversation went too far. We then blamed it on our respective wives/fiances and vowed to never speak about it again. At least not until next week, ’till the new episode comes out… As for this article, I don’t really know how it ties into this blog, but I thought that it would be rather funny, either that or humiliating. You make the call…
Nutt Resigns
Just 3 days after leading his team to an improbable victory over the number 1 team in the nation, Arkansas Razorbacks coach Houston Nutt resigns. Nutt, 50, said he was hopeful his departure would unify the state. What? According to him, the state had been torn with turmoil surrounding the football program and his resignation was to help them overcome this problem. This all started during the winter after the loss of key recruits and a very popular assistant coach. More trouble mounted for the coach as the Razorbacks lost their first three Southeastern Conference games. Couple that with a turmoil-filled off-season, and low and behold, the State of Arkansas was in shambles! I am all for college football and dedication, but if the State is in crisis because the football program is having a couple of down years……… Well, I guess if I lived in Arkansas, I wouldn’t have much more important things to worry about either. Defensive coordinator Reggie Herring will coach the team in its bowl game.
Bye Bye Donovan McNabb
Everyone saw what the Philadelphia Eagles can do without Donovan McNabb. Sure they lost against the Patriots, but then again, so did the Indianapolis Colts. On Sunday night, A.J. Feely, in his first start since 2004, went into New England and put up a fight that McNabb could only dream of. I’ve been saying it all season, time for this guy (Donovan) to go. The Eagles need to trade him and get some marquee player(s) or draft picks for him. Westbrook is tearing it up, but his days are numbered. That Philly defense is not what it used to be. The wide receiver corp needs major help. Forget this season Philly, think next year, and think about getting rid of McNabb and his cancerous attitude. Plus, I hear there’s a recall on all Campbell’s soup. Try Cup of Noodles…
New England Patriots: Ooooh So Close
The Philadelphia Eagles almost did it, ALMOST. How does that saying go, “almost only counts in horse shoes and hand grenades.” They almost shocked the nation and beat out the Patriots, but fell short, 31-28. Sources say that the whole state of New England was on suicide watch throughout the game. Everyone can rest now, the Pats will go undefeated and will win the Superbowl. Don’t hate on them, they’re a good team. Everyone called them liars and cheaters and now they are punishing every team, every city, and every fan that ever doubted them. I would do the same thing, and so would you. So just sit back and enjoy the ride, you know you want to. Don’t fight the feeling.
Canadiens Retire Robinson’s Number
A six-time Stanley Cup champion in 17 seasons with the Canadiens from 1972-89, Larry Robinson had his number 19 retired by the Montreal Canadiens. “Big Bird” won the Norris Trophy as the league’s best defenseman twice and also led the Los Angeles Kings to their one and only Stanley Cup Finals appearance. Robinson won the Conn Smythe Trophy as playoff MVP in 1977 after recording a plus-120 during the 1976-77, the second best single season plus-minus mark in league history. The ceremony began with video tributes from Wayne Gretzky, Ken Dryden, current Canadiens coach Guy Carbonneau, and Dave Schultz. He was a hard hitting and physical defensemen on the ice, but was known as a teddy bear and a gentlemen off of it. Congrats to one of the biggest icons in NHL history. Robinson, currently an assistant coach with the New Jersey Devils, becomes the 13th player to have his number retired by the Canadiens.
Brodeur Wins 500th
Martin Brodeur of the New Jersey Devils wins his 500th career game against the Philadelphia Flyers on Saturday, becoming the second player in NHL history to do so. Brodeur reached one of hockey’s rarest milestones, joining Patrick Roy as the only two goalies to have ever reached that number. He is now 500-273-105-15. To put things in perspective, the closest active goalie to 500 wins is Dominik Hasek of the Red Wings… He is 133 wins away! Brodeur has spent his entire 14 seasons with the Devils and has led the franchise to three Stanley Cup titles. The 35-year-old on pace to pass Roy on the career win list (551) at some point next season.
