The TRUTH about Sports

Sports Betting 101:

onthebuzzer.com professoronthebuzzer.com and1 aka the professorAttention all viewers (including certain ONTHEBUZZER EDGitors)that are unsure of the rules of sports betting. There have been certain inaccurate statements made about betting, when you win, when you lose, and when you push.  As such, the Professor (no, not the guy from the “and1″ mix tour) is going to give you a lesson in sports gambling. Remember, we don’t encourage it, we just don’t want you to make a fool of yourself in public.

LESSON 1: To bet against the spread is to make a wager that will be decided by adding points to one team or the other after the game is played.

  • Examples: Ned bet against the spread that the Patriots (-7) would beat the Eagles. That means the Patriots would have to win BY MORE THAN 7 points for Ned to win his bet.

Lesson 2: A “PUSH” occures when a tie against the spread. On straight bets the result is “no action.” All monies are returned as if the bet had never been made.

  • Examples: Duke was favored by 10 and won by 10, thereby resulting in a push.

APPLICATION: Let’s say that the LSU Tigers are going to play say… the Alabama Crimson Tide. Let’s take it a step further and say that the Tigers are favored by 7 and you picked the Tigers against the spread. If the Tigers win, say 41-34 (a 7 point difference) nobody wins, a push has occurred and there is “no action” and all monies are returned as if the bet had never been made.

This is your professor Ara from ONTHEBUZZER Univ. Remember, if you wanna be on the cutting EDGE, you gotta know the rules…

  2. It’s a lot tougher than it looks! A word of advice here, stick to good teams that are small to medium underdogs – they are always trying to win the game so they are automatically trying to cover the spread. Not always true with the favorites.
